Is It Time for Recess Yet?

Adulting can be hard work - especially these days. Remember when we got to have P.E. in school? It was one of my favorite classes. The fun, the freedom the fresh air! Isn't it time we got that feeling back? We can! According to this article in the Wall Street Journal, adult recess is a thing & a booming trend.

I'm all for that! It's not a secret - I love to play. And I'll bet you do too. We are designed for joy and laughter. You know what they say - all work and no play makes Jack a cranky pants and Jill a grumpy skirt (a little artistic license here).

The good news from NBC News is it turns out that adult recess time not only has the obvious physical benefits but also has important mental health benefits of reducing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline and helps you to relax. Now more than ever we all could use some of that.

If your freshman memories included being picked last for the volleyball team or getting pummeled on the dodge ball court, this too can be overcome (without psychological counseling). Pick something you enjoy doing that doesn't bring back childhood trauma and go do it. I was talking with a colleague the other day and she asked me if there was a test she could take to learn what sport might fit her personality. It turns out - there is! I discovered this sports/personality assessment in my research to answer her question. It only takes a couple of minutes & may give you more insight if you're not sports-playing fanatic (yet).

No matter what flavor or sport or movement or fun suits your fancy . . . . dust off the sneakers, shake off the lock down syndrome, & get out and play! It's good for mind, body and spirit!

Cheers to your health!
